WELLINGTON: Celebration of Foundation Day of India Centre for Migration (ICM)
WELLINGTON: The India Centre for Migration
(ICM), (earlier known as Council for Promotion of Overseas Employment) was
renamed on 27 March 2012, as a think tank, with the mandate to cover all
international migration related issues. To commemorate its formation, ICM
celebrated its Foundation Day today, as part of India@75 celebrations. Shri
Sanjay Bhattacharyya, Secretary (CPV & OIA) and Chairman ICM, members of
Governing Council of ICM and key partners and stakeholders participated in the
virtual event on the occasion.
Since its inception, ICM has worked to fulfil its mandate of serving as think
tank to MEA. ICM has focused on medium and long-term strategies regarding
overseas employment of Indian workers, has commissioned and undertaken studies
on labour market and has collaborated with various UN and international
organisations, academic institutes and research organisations to enhance knowledge
on migration issues.
It has engaged in capacity building, training
and awareness generation programmes on international migration, especially
Pre-Departure Orientation Programme. ICM has also contributed to identification
of emerging sectors and destinations for employment opportunities for potential
Indian migrant workers going abroad. ICM has produced several handbooks on
practical issues pertaining to migration, including for Women Workers and Law
Enforcement Authorities. During the Covid pandemic, ICM engaged in wide ranging
discussions with stakeholders on a range of migration related issues.
At the event, two knowledge products developed by ICM, A report on ‘The Impact
of Covid-19 on India’s International Migration’ and ‘Student Handbook for Studying
Abroad’, were launched. With these publications ICM hopes to create greater
awareness regarding mobility of Indian workforce as well as the student
community aspiring for opportunities abroad.
